The Story of X Able

The Story of
X Able

X Able’s vision was born at the National Institute of Design (NID) — as a graduation project rooted in empathy, research, and the desire to make the world more inclusive for people with sensory impairments.

During field research at Anandwan, Warora — a self-sustaining community founded by Baba Amte — the team witnessed something that changed everything. In one classroom, visually impaired and speech-and-hearing-impaired children shared the same space, yet couldn’t connect. There was silence where communication should have been.

That moment sparked a question that became the foundation of X Able:

“How can design bridge sensory barriers and enable everyone to communicate and learn freely?”

From Research to Reality

From Research
to Reality

Between 2020 and 2022, the project evolved through deep user research, ideation, and prototyping. Collaborations with the Blind People’s Association, NID Business Incubator (NDBI), and iCreate provided the space, mentorship, and funding to turn insights into real solutions.

Through co-creation and empathy-driven design, the team engaged with learners, teachers, and caregivers, uncovering how accessibility needs shift across contexts. Each round of testing and feedback led to refined iterations — products that were not just functional, but meaningful and empowering.

Designing for Inclusion

Designing for
Inclusion

What began as a project grew into a purpose — to design tools that make learning, play, and communication truly accessible. By March 2024, this purpose took shape as X Able — a name inspired by “Accessible” and “Experienced Abled,” symbolizing a belief that every individual deserves equal opportunity and experience.

Today, X Able creates Accessible Educational Tools, Inclusive Spaces, and Developmental Toys that bring learning and independence within everyone’s reach. Its flagship innovation, the Braille Box, stands as the world’s most affordable Braille learning device and the only two-way communication system designed for individuals with deafblindness — a breakthrough that bridges worlds once divided by silence.

Recognized by leading special institutions, celebrated through design awards, and supported by CSR initiatives, X Able continues to move forward with one simple yet powerful mission —

To design a world where accessibility isn’t an exception, but a way of life.
